A letter to my Mom
Hey Mom!
I’ve been in your life for 60 years and though we sent many cards to each other over the years this is my first and last letter to you. As I reflected on our life together; I wanted you to know the impact you made in my life; other than of course giving birth to me!
• The many phone calls over the years to connect and catch up with each other. Sooner or later our chats always included food. Plus, a quick run to the bathroom afterwards because we talked so long.
• You and Dad making the trek to our place to celebrate all of our birthdays throughout the year. Staying for Canada Day fireworks and being part of the Deckert family Christmas. For many years our kids were fortunate to have both sets of grandparents be part of their special day. Yes, you brought presents, but it was your presence that we looked forward to.
• The honest, hard conversations we had with each other about my childhood; acknowledgement and forgiveness.
• The closeness we developed while Dad was in the hospital for his heart surgery meant so much to me. Staying with us, sharing the ups and downs, rides to the hospital and Teeswater and your favourite; shopping at the hospital! Do you remember all the vendors who sold everything from boots to jewelry? I still have the earrings you bought me that day!
• The importance of family and getting together with your daughters & daughter in-law annually the Saturday of Mothers Day weekend. It varied regarding what we did that day, and although I know you really liked going shopping, you loved spending the time with us the best!
• I learnt from the best when it came to baking! I know you spent many hours perfecting your baking which resulted in you winning many prizes at the Teeswater Fall Fair. No one made an apple pie like you did Mom. Mine doesn’t come close. As you know I have shared some of your recipes with your grandsons who follow in your footsteps and both like to bake. Though Brad did have trouble with your recipe that called for a skimpy teaspoon of vanilla. Something you and I both shared a laugh about but right away you stuck up for him and said that it was great that he was willing to learn.
• Teaching me how to care for babies. It meant I never had to take a course before I had Brent, I was already trained.
• My love of country music. Without you I would not know all the words to songs from Charlie Pride and Conway Twitty.
• Courage and resilience are something you have demonstrated to me and I want to continue to do myself. A couple examples…..
o Getting a job at the grocery store in your retirement years.
o Having 8 children. I know you considered us a blessing from God but you had 8 of us!
o OH, did I mention Dad, yes, 61 years of marriage definitely requires resilience!
o Years of organizing many church events as part of the CWL.
• And last; this past year. Coming back from an almost fatal stroke to getting back on your feet and returning home for Easter. That was true resilience Mom.
Sadly the challenges just didn’t stop Mom. I know you did your best throughout. They were difficult times but there were occasional bouts of sunshine. Seeing you smile when we arrived for our weekly visit and thanking us for coming. When we went for walks around Chesley, Pat always teased you about dumping you out of the wheelchair and you always said “you better not”. Pat loved to sit on your walker during our visits so he could roll back and forth. One visit I was sitting on it and he asked me to to come look at something and proceeded to steal the walker. You looked at him and said with a smile “you little shit”. We loved to see your smile Mom. Or when you told me what a good husband he is and how incredibly lucking I am to have him in my life. Last, the day you, Marie and I had lunch out at Stacks. You were happy to be away from the hospital and to eat food unlike the hospital provided. We all dug into waffles, fresh fruit and whipped cream. They gave you so much whipped cream. It makes me smile every time I think about the whipped cream that ended up on your nose, your sleeves and your diamond. Good thing you were able to take the diamond off so I could clean it in the bathroom.
I will never forget what you said that day after we cleaned ourselves up. You said, “next time we will order something not as messy.” I so regret we won’t have that next time Mom.
I will keep within my heart, the many memories of you and all the love you gave to me.
I will end my letter as we always ended our phone calls ……Love you Mom and I can hear you say in my head “love you Theresa”.

To the Henhoeffer and Martin families.
So very sorry to hear about Phyllis. It was a nice surprise to be able to chat with both George and Phyllis at the Chesley Hospital last fall when they and my wife were patients there. I remember working with Phyllis at my parents grocery store in Teeswater, although at my age back then I was likely more in the way than helpful. Lots of contact and good memories with the Martin family over the years, way back to Joe and Helen. Good folks.
Sincere condolences.
