Adolf was born in Rossin, Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland, Germany); losing his dad to WW2 at the age of 5, growing up in his family’s heimat the Domschenmuhle, in Zeigerhiem, and eventually making his way to ‘West Germany’ as a youth. Adolf considered careers as a baker or a florist -- both of which seem appropriate given his appreciation for Sharon’s homemade apple pie and buns, and his wealth of interest and knowledge of trees, birds and nature in general. Instead, he pursued formal education as Herdsman, training in Farming for three years milking cows for Asom’s in Kissing. At the age of 18 he applied and immigrated to Canada in 1957 as an Agricultural Apprentice. His English was very limited. Sailing across the sea on the ‘Arosa Sky’ landing first at Pier 21 in Halifax, then travelling by train to Ontario. He began picking tobacco on farms near Delhi, eventually being placed on a dairy farm in this area. In 1961 he met the love of his life, Sharon Lippert. It was at this time that Adolf returned to his homeland to live, but his heart remained in Canada, so he returned. Adolf and Sharon were married on July 20, 1963. They bought their first dairy farm together near Cargill and began their lives together. In March of 1969, they were able to upgrade and purchased the 100-acre dairy farm located outside of Formosa on the 10th concession of Culross offering increased herd capacity and milk production. They were blessed with 5 children between 1964 and 1974. They were successful farmers and financially responsible, and purchased ‘the other place’, a 150-acre beef cow/calf operation in 1982 as well as an additional 100-acre property on the 12th of Culross in 1986. Adolf and Sharon farmed together from 1963 to 2005.
Adolf enjoyed racing pigeons, playing cards, fishing and hunting -- acquiring their “Freedom 55” camp near Elliot Lake to pursue these hobbies. In retirement, Adolf and Sharon travelled throughout Canada, Europe, and USA experiencing the unique foods, landscape, and culture of each area. They watched their grandchildren be born and grow up, get married, and produce great-grandchildren for them. Their family tree (Stammbaum) reflected success in creating a legacy of four generations and ‘51 leaves’ over their lifetime!
Adolf could be best described as determined, brave, hard-core when it came to principals and moral values; a proud, stubborn, and ideal example of his nationality, complex in disposition, but a steadfast provider dedicated to his wife and family. He jokingly described himself as ‘neither proud nor particular’. Everyone who met him remarked about the twinkle in his eyes and found him to be a comical and likeable character.
Following Adolf’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service to honour his life will be held at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Mildmay, on Monday, July 14, 2025; his final resting place.
Memorial donations to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
