Here is Paul's Eulogy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul.
A name that many have been called over time, for example:
• A Biblical Disciple
• Saints and Popes
• Prime Ministers and Presidents
• Hall of Famers
• Nobel Prize Winners
• Along with many notable musicians, artists, and, philosophers.
It comes from the Roman family name Paulus, which meant "small" or "humble" in Latin. Anna, you and Jim chose Paul’s name well to represent him.
Paul loved life, loved others, and ALWAYS put others first. Paul epitomized humility.
He worked hard. Always has. He never even took sick days off work at a career that spanned more than 35 years in the most difficult of working conditions underground. And, he would always help when asked, no matter how hard, difficult, or time consuming, the task would be.
Paul loved to see the glory of God’s creation and always had a camera with him. Much like his Aunt Madeline and others in the McKinnon family that have an artistic eye, Paul’s pictures capture the beauty of what he saw around him, and, document events he shared with family and friends.
Paul also thought of himself as somewhat of an art critic. His home in Edmonton was slowly becoming his own museum collection of artifacts and artwork that he found at various garage sales and other venues. He always hoped to find his own Tom Thompson collecting dust somewhere unbeknownst to its owner.
Paul’s art insight usually arrived to the rest of us as unique Christmas gifts. We would all be surprised by the gifts that he had sent but all knew full well that he had taken time, and put much thought and effort, into buying it specifically for us.
Paul loved the outdoors and hunting and fishing. He knew how to put his faith into action when fishing and return with a good catch. Much to Kenny’s complaint at times that Paul had been praying, that’s why he caught all the fish.
Paul loved all things that life brought to him, playing cards with his nephews, and, even spending some time at the Casino and racetrack. He was a huge Oilers fan and thoroughly enjoyed his time at the games with Kyle and friends, and, even would have liked to be an usher at the games. He would certainly have been a good one.
The most important though was Family. Paul loved his family here in Ontario but work took him out West at an early age. Being alone would have been hard for a family guy like Paul. The Bible says in Ps 68:6 that ‘God places the solitary in families’, and, knowing Paul’s heart and humility, God gave Paul the opportunity to be part of the John family out there and to share his strong character and work ethic, and, love with all around him.
A dear family friend wrote a piece titled " You and Paul". Although it was not written for our Paul, it captures the essence of knowing our Paul. It reads:
“What was essential between You and Paul has not died. A part of that reality may have, but not the deepest and most important part. He is still your brother. You are still his sister. The Paul who has gone from our sight did not become who he was without you. You did not become who you are without him. If those who knew him for only a time can say that they are somehow different because of him, that he left his mark on them, with how much more reason can you say he changed you in some way forever. We do not become ourselves all by ourselves. Those we love and those who love us help to fashion us into the persons we become. You carry Paul within you in ways you may not even know. He carried you in ways he may not have imagined.”
Paul was definitely loved by everyone and hated by none. He has certainly left us with a Godly standard to live up to and follow for the balance of our time here on earth until we meet him again. Paul was so kind, thoughtful, patient and gentle that he shined in a way that has a power to change us for the better, just by being Paul.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You will always be in our hearts Paul.
Love, Jon and Louise Taverner

I’m so very sorry to hear of the passing of Paul. It’s been many years since I’ve seen you Louise, but I remember very well all the fun we use to have. Many times Paul would join us on our crazy nights. He was a very nice, quiet guy. With deepest sympathy and warm regards, Kathleen (King) Kelly
