Oh how badly I wanted to come to Teeswater to see you all yesterday, yes and hugs too. (freezing rain here)
It has been so long, but I have so many wonderful, vivid memories of time spent with your Mom. I have often regretted moving away - your mom had been so important to me.
I still think often of when Lorne was so sick - how I would slip over any time for a coffee and yes, for a cry too.
So many times I sat at your dining room table. I remember the Bid Euchre games there too. I remember Biff making a ramp so that I could wheel Lorne to the garage.
Your mom was so talented. I know you all will have her beautiful quilts. Your mom was so proud of you all. She used to tell me what you were all up to. That’s why I feel I still know you all.
Cherish your memories. Lots of love,
Lucille Fischer

I have had the pleasure of knowing Rita for about 60 yrs. First met her back when we had the grocery store. I remember going to the farm to make homemade sausage with Biff and Rita. Rita cooked sausage patties for lunch, never had them before, and I think of her whenever I cook one. Rita was a good friend, a good neighbour. Enjoyed playing cards with her and Biff, especially bid euchre. Recently when I delivered for Brown's medical supplies I would call Rita and we would chat while I was driving back to Walkerton. Then life got busy last year and regretfully I didn't get to visit or call my old friend.
Condolences to family. We lost a great lady.

Tribute to Aunt Rita
I had been at the farm and had brought in to town some Rhubarb to give to Aunt Rita.
That Rhubarb had been planted by my mother at the base of the pole at the end of the Clothes drying line, and I asked Aunt Rita if she remembered that original farm house. And of course, Aunt Rita had a story.
It was March/April of 1947. During the STORM of '47 my mother, Regina (Strauss) Cronin had been taken by sleigh to Walkerton Hospital to give birth to my brother Pat, and had been storm stayed there. When she came home, Rita Millen (as she was then) had come over as Mother's helper. Aunt Rita remembered washing diapers with a washboard as the snow from that storm melted. Soon, they saw my mother's brother, Bif come up the driveway. Apparently my mother said something like “Oh, it's Bif, coming to see the new baby”, and my mother, Regina, was very pleased that Bif was eager to come over to see her new baby. Rita suspected that Bif had come over to see her, and that Baby Pat was just an excuse. Apparently no one had known that there were sparks flying between the two of them already, and when telling this story, it was clear that my Aunt still got a kick out of pulling the wool over my mother's eyes at the time. Eighty years later, she still had a twinkle in her eye and got a kick out of telling that story.
We kids did our share of rough housing and sometimes got into trouble for it. Imagine my surprise when there was a “game” at one of the Strauss picnics that my mother and Aunt Rita got into. Three legged races and egg tosses were expected. But Mother and Aunt Rita got into a Whacking contest. They each took off a shoe, and laid down on the grass head to toe, toe to head. The object of the game was they were to alternate rocking forward and backward, and as the other one rolled backward the one rocking forward attempted to whack the other one's bottom with the shoe.
I was shocked. The mothers were the ones who discouraged this kind of rough housing, but give them a chance, and they could get right into it. And Believe me, Aunt Rita could get Right into it. Somewhere there is a blurry photo of that reunion's Whacking contest.
There were many card parties, as a kid, I used to bring tea and pour it into the china tea cups, listening to all the laughter and joy shared in those card parties. As a kid I wasn't much interested in the adult conversations, but the ritual of laughing and friendly competition over those games of cards and tea being drunk from those precious china tea cups is something I'll always remember.
The other social event that Aunt Rita was part of was the Quilting bees. Two of my children have quilts made at those bees, and as we remember my Aunt, I also remember that some of the stitches in those quilts were made by her. And these will be treasured.
To all of my cousins, Many Hugs. You have a legacy to be proud of.
Teresa Cronin

Our deepest sympathies to all the Strauss family. Aunt Rita was a kind person who seemed to find the bright side of any situation. Such a positive personality. She will be missed. Fond memories of visits with Ken, Ted, Linda and Bob when we were growing up. I think we may have gotten into trouble a couple times (usually Ted’s fault).
Rest in peace Aunt Rita. You are now with Uncle Biff and Linda.
